Reuben “Uncle Bud” Robinson
During my studying this past week I was reminded of a story my father likes to tell about an old Nazarene preacher by
the name of “Uncle Bud Robinson.” Uncle Bud Robinson was a character.
He would pray…
Lord Jesus; help me to declare war on the devil.
Give me a backbone as big as a saw log,
and ribs like crossties,
and iron shoes along with galvanized breeches,
and give me a rhinoceros hide for a skin,
and hang a barrel full of determination in the gable-end of my soul.
Help me to sign the contract to fight the devil as long as I live.
Help me to beat him as long as I’ve got fists,
and to kick him as long as I’ve got feet,
and to bite him as long as I’ve got teeth.
And when I’m too old to hit him with my fists
and to kick him with my feet,
and when I no longer have a tooth to bit him,
help me to gum him until I die.
All this for Christ’s sake…Amen.
Reuben “Uncle Bud” Robinson 1860-1942 was born in a log cabin in the primitive mountain region of Tennessee. When he was 16, his father died, and his mother sold what little they had and moved to Texas. After an unsuccessful endeavor as a sharecropper, Bud hired out as a ranch hand.
In August of 1880, during a camp meeting, he felt deep conviction for his sin and trusted Christ as his Savior and was gloriously saved. That same night, while lying under the wagon with his hat on a mesquite stump for a pillow, the Lord called him to preach.
Although he had no education and stuttered so badly that he could hardly tell his name, yet in the first year of his ministry he saw about 300 conversions in his meetings. On January 10, 1893, he married Miss Sallie Harper at Georgetown, Texas.
The remaining 60 years of his ministry were given to evangelism. While lacking formal education, Uncle Bud had a wisdom all of his own. It was an unusual insight into the purpose for the redeemed man here on earth, a holy walk, day by day.
During his long ministry, it is estimated that Uncle Bud traveled over 2,000,000 miles, preached over 33,000 ser- mons, witnessed more than 100,000 conversions, personally gave more than $85,000.00 in helping young people with their Christian education.
In spite of his handicaps and physical ailments, speech impediment and lack of education, he made the Who’s Who of California. From Boston to Los Angeles, thousands thronged to hear him, charmed by his homespun wit and his unique presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His life was one of activity, and his will to his dying hour was to serve his Lord. He went to be with the Lord on November 2, 1942. I guess within the next 50years, or so, I will chill with Uncle Bud in Heaven.
Haiti’s Churches
Many of you have been watching the horrendous images and videos that have been placed online from Haiti. My
heart has been wrecked for that struggling country. There have been several times this week that I talked with Jill about trying to fly or take a boat into the shredded, discouraged country simply to move large rock and stone off of bodies for a week or two. I pray that things get in order soon so that many can make their way to Haiti to offer them aid.
So this begs the question, what can we do here in America?
I know that there are hundreds of mediums that are seeking your financial help for the sake of Haiti. I would like to encourage you to give to Churches Helping Churches This is an organization created by Mark Driscoll and James MacDonald that will help serve pastors and their churches during this crucial time in the life of this country.
Please pray about helping.
Prayer and RE:focus
Hey!
Today has been a very “weighty” day for me—a day that has been somewhat somber. I am not totally sure why it has been this way. Perhaps it’s that some of The Axis Church friends and family are struggling and I am feeling that weight. Maybe it’s because God really worked in my heart earlier today. I guess it could be a combination of several things.
Whatever the reason for my heaviness of spirit, I do appreciate it because it has drawn me close to the words of God.
Here are a few personal things I am thinking through and working on from today…
This is a quote shared from Scott Thomas (Acts29 Network President) regarding church planting:
Work on creating a united gospel community on mission and focus on making disciples not building a church. If you focus on building a church, people will feel used. If you make disciples of those God has gathered together, they will multiply the disciples. Be a united gospel community on mission first.
This quote has been ringing in my ears for the past several weeks. I believe that what we at The Axis Church must be about is simply understanding the gospel together as a community, being on mission with the same vision/goals and then making disciples of Christ. The church will be fine and will grow, as God wants it to as long as we focus on these three things.
Of course there are several things that we must be concerned with but none nearly as important as these three—gospel, mission, disciples.
I see The Axis Church being a missional community that is theological conservative and culturally liberal. Meaning that we effectively engage an increasingly secular culture with the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ. We must learn how to better take the gospel (that we ourselves are being changed by—daily) to the city of Nashville—rendering it renewed, transformed thus ultimately satisfied.
We must pray for God’s agenda for The Axis Church to become our agenda for The Axis Church.
On that, I have several things that I would like to see happen one day with The Axis Church.
- Host conferences
- Plant several other churches (10+)
- See our facility gather our community like a magnet via after school tutoring, venue for shows & concerts, etc.
- Perhaps start a business in Germantown that is open for community from 7pm-midnight
- I would like to write a few books
- Change the city of Nashville for Jesus
- Train up other pastors
These are just a few of the things that I am praying for The Axis Church to be able to accomplish. These are some of the things that I have been thinking today.
Today I have also been praying through these different things…
- Praying for Christ’s agenda to be my agenda—thus our agenda
- Praying for deacons
- Praying for elders/pastors to help care for the future converts
- Praying for community group concepts/ dreams to become a reality
- Praying that I would spend more time in God’s Word and in prayer with Him
- Praying for God to allow me to become a missiologist of Nashville—investigating the city then leading The Axis Church to mission in reaching the city. Basically that I would listen and listen well to the city of Nashville.
- Praying for more families to join us on mission
- Praying for help with the PowerPoint on Sundays (creating and running)
- Praying for children volunteers (both male & female)
- Praying for a projector, screen & sound system
- Pray for those far from Christ to be brought near only by the sheer grace of God
Anyhow, I just wanted you to have a glimpse into my life today. Let’s pray together regarding these things. Would you?
Grace to you,
Pastor Jeremy
Is it “good” to know how to help and do it not?
Please watch, but more importantly understand the MISSION OF GOD. We exist to worship and glorify God–YES. But we also exist to help others see their need to do the same.
Pray.Speak.Go.
If you couldn’t care any less, BEG GOD TO SEE MANKIND AS HE DOES…in need of being RESCUED.
